Ballerup Municipality has no fewer than 20 bus routes. Five of them are so-called S and E-buses. These have fewer stops and get you to your destination faster in traffic. These bus routes are complemented by two local service bus routes.
Our five central train stations ensure you can get to Frederikssund or Copenhagen with the S-train quickly and easily. It takes approximately 25 minutes to get to Copenhagen. -
We make the safety of pedestrians and cyclists a priority. We have a well-developed system of high-quality paths. Three Cycle Super Highways also cross Ballerup, making it attractive to cycle here from e.g. Copenhagen, Lyngby, Værløse, Frederikssund and Albertslund.

Our daycare facilities for children up to the age of five are split into five districts. You can get a place in a “børnehus” in the district where you live. You can also get a place with a municipal childminder, where your child is looked after for the day together with three other children in a private household. Childminding is an option if your child is less than three years old.
If you want to use a daycare facility outside Ballerup Municipality or want to find a childminder yourself, you can obtain a grant from the municipality.

The Danish municipal primary and lower secondary school system (Folkeskole) is where children are educated between the ages of 6 and 16. In Denmark, children start school in the year in which they attain their sixth birthday.
In Ballerup Municipality, we have five primary and lower secondary schools, each serving its own district.
All children are assured of a place in the school district in which they live. If you want to enrol a child at a school, you should contact your district school directly.
In Ballerup, we also have reception classes for children and young people who do not speak Danish.
The reception classes are all located at Hedegård School. Reception classes are offered to pupils who do not speak and understand Danish well enough to be able to follow the teaching in a regular class within a municipal primary and lower secondary school.

You have the option of enrolling your child in an after-school activity when they start their first year of primary school. For children in the first four years of primary school, it takes place at BFO (Ballerup after-school activities) which is attached to your child’s school. This provides activities, play facilities and interaction for two to three hours after school. Registration takes place via the school.
From their fifth year of primary school onwards, your child can become a member of a leisure club and, later on, a youth club when they reach the age of 14. Youth clubs provide leisure activities and interaction. It is a good idea to find out from the school which club sections are within the local area of the school, so that your child can be with their classmates.

There are more than 22,500 permanent homes in Ballerup Municipality. Approximately half of these are private properties, while about 57% are rentals in the non-profit housing sector, which is a widespread form of accommodation in Denmark run by non-profit housing associations and local estate committees.
You can find apartments, terraced houses and detached houses in a variety of sizes in Ballerup, and the accommodation is reasonably priced compared to the surrounding municipalities.
Furthermore, houses in Ballerup Municipality are in general newer and larger than in Copenhagen and are designed for modern families with comfortable kitchens and bathrooms and large bedrooms.
In Ballerup you will find an abundance of leisure facilities and play grounds near all residential areas.

Multi-use arena
Ballerup Super Arena is Denmark’s only indoor bike arena and one of the country’s largest multi-use arenas. All year round, the modern multi-use arena provides the setting for a number of events at international level in sport, entertainment and business.
Music and theatre
Baltoppen LIVE is the municipality’s big cultural centre, which presents touring professional artists, theatre companies and bands, bringing with them music (folk, rock, pop, jazz), the performing arts, modern circus, contemporary dance, traditional theatre, and stand-up.
The Ballerup Musik- og Kulturskole offers teaching for all children and young people in the municipality up to 25 years old. The school offers rhythmics, music workshops, instrumental lessons, and courses in song, computer music and study techniques.
Spillestedet Baghuset is the municipality’s small cosy live music venue, located in a warehouse in Reehs Kjøbmandsgård that is well over 100 years old. Its repertoire features a wide range of events, e.g. concerts, plays and reviews.
Library
Ballerup has one large library and two smaller cultural centres. In the library and cultural centres, you can borrow books, movies, games and much more.
Museum
Ballerup Museum is located in the old village of Pederstrup, where the farms with their thatched roofs are dotted around a small pond. The museum provides an insight into the local history of the municipality and daily life in Ballerup in the days when Ballerup was still a village. The museum has a special exhibition about the Grand Duchess Olga, who lived in Ballerup from 1930 to 1948.

Education is important, and in Ballerup Municipality education certainly plays a central role. We have just about every upper secondary education option within the municipality’s boundaries, and having a university makes us one of Denmark’s few university cities.
